Another day, another early start …. heading closer to the Statt. We had a couple of options to position ourselves ready to go round the Statt, but in the end decided on Måløy. On advice from a local we routed a trip round to the east through the fjord to take up past Hornelen. This is the highest sea cliff in Europe at 860 metres, and it was spectacular – even in the misty murky rain which we had. Rain though, of course, means waterfalls, so there was an upside!

One constant for the last few days has been fishing boats – not just small coastal boats (which are everywhere as well) but large scale industrial North Sea fishing boats – many of them factory trawlers which do all the processing as well as catching. In total the Norwegian fishing industry generates around 22 billion NOK for the Norwegian economy. This does include fish farms as well as wild-caught fish, but nevertheless, it is still an important contributor to GDP with around 17,000 people employed by the industry.

As we went round the Hornelen we noticed that there was a Via Ferrata on the cliff. This apparently runs right up to the top, but we decided to keep going past!

We arrived at Måløy about 2.30pm after a 30 mile passage and later on were reassured to see a state of the art lifeboat on patrol – named presumably after Edvard Grieg. I am sure he would have been touched!
